The #1 Indicator in a Positive Birth Experience

Continuity of Care

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, continuity of care is the ability to provide uninterrupted care or service across programs, practitioners and levels over time. Continuity of care promotes patient safety and assures quality of care.

Research in 2024 demonstrates that women who receive continuity of care with a midwife:

  • are more likely to experience spontaneous vaginal birth

  • report more positive experiences during pregnancy, labour, and postpartum

  • enjoy cost savings in the antenatal and intrapartum period

Continuity of care is a form of proactive care, where a trusting and respectful environment and relationship is established, which allows the person receiving care to feel that they have autonomy and can co-create outcomes with their care provider’s support. In this context, any issues or concerns the patient expresses can be monitored as they arise, as opposed to reactive care, which focuses on identifying, naming and ‘fixing’ problems.

One Woman, One Midwife

In an interview with Verve Magazine, Zoe Naylor, one of the co-founders and co-producers of Birth Time, the Documentary, states that only 8% of Australian women can access continuity of midwifery care. Yet, all the research indicates that continuity of midwifery care leads to better outcomes for mothers and babies.

If all women/people could choose to work in partnership with one midwife who provided them with continuity of care throughout their entire pregnancy, birth and postnatal period, more women/people could emerge from their births physically well and emotionally safe.

Our Commitment to Continuity of Care

  • We recognise that accessibility of continuity of care is difficult.

  • We also recognise that even when continuity of midwifery care is accessed, it usually ends at 6 weeks postpartum

But, when the excitement and freshness of the newborn and new mother fades

…that’s when parenthood can become challenging.

That’s why we stay with you for the ride.

We offer a comprehensive Continuity of Care Package to support you across both the prenatal and postpartum periods, all the way through your first year of parenthood. Because we know that matrescence is an ongoing journey, and the way you start a journey lays the foundation.
